Most people are back at a desk within a few days to two weeks after liposuction, wear a compression garment for about four to six weeks, avoid strenuous exercise for four to six weeks, and see the final shape only after several months. The Aesthetic Society says swelling peaks around 48 hours after surgery, is mostly gone within two to three weeks, and can linger slightly for up to four months. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) expects bruising to be gone by weeks four to five and gentle exercise to start from week six. If you have surgery in Colombia, the date that usually decides your trip is the flight home: ASPS suggests waiting 5–7 days after liposuction, but Avianca, Colombia's flag carrier, lists 14 days.

These are general ranges, not a personal plan. How many areas are treated, how much fat is removed, whether anything else is done in the same operation and how your body heals all move the dates. Your surgeon sets your timeline after surgery.

Liposuction recovery time at a glance

Stage What general sources describe
First 48 hours Soreness, swelling and bruising; incisions may leak fluid for several days; walking starts early (The Aesthetic Society, SCCP)
Week 1 Significantly limited activity (ASPS); bruising often fades in 7 to 10 days (The Aesthetic Society); stitches out at 7 to 10 days if used
Weeks 2 to 3 You start to feel much better and may return to work depending on the job (ASPS); most swelling is gone (The Aesthetic Society)
Weeks 4 to 6 Bruising gone and swelling subsiding (ASPS); compression garment usually stops between four and six weeks (The Aesthetic Society)
Week 6 and beyond Gentle exercise and a gradual return to full activity (ASPS); no sun or heat exposure before six weeks (The Aesthetic Society)
Months 3 to 6 The area looks slimmer within several months (Mayo Clinic); NHS says it can take up to six months to settle completely

Liposuction recovery week by week

The milestones below come from patient guidance published by ASPS, The Aesthetic Society, Mayo Clinic, the NHS and the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery (SCCP). Where they disagree, both numbers are shown, because the disagreement itself tells you how much recovery varies.

Surgery day. You wake up in a compression garment or elastic bandages, sometimes with small drains. Mayo Clinic says most people spend at least a few hours being monitored, and an overnight stay is possible if a lot of fluid was removed. Whatever happens, someone needs to take you back to your lodging and stay with you at least the first night (Mayo Clinic); the NHS asks for 24 hours of company after general anesthesia.

Days 1 to 3. This is the uncomfortable stretch. The Aesthetic Society describes the feeling as soreness more than sharp pain, with swelling that peaks around 48 hours and incisions that may leak fluid for several days. Rest, but do not stay in bed: the SCCP recommends walking with someone from the first day after surgery, taking short walks often and breathing deeply, and flexing and stretching your arms and legs while resting to help circulation. Avoid bending, straining and lifting in this early period (The Aesthetic Society).

Days 4 to 7. Bruising starts to fade; The Aesthetic Society says it typically disappears within seven to ten days, while ASPS places it fully gone by weeks four to five. Expect both, depending on how many areas were treated. Stitches, if you have them, usually come out at seven to ten days (The Aesthetic Society) or after about a week (NHS). Many people with desk jobs can work again within a few days (Mayo Clinic, The Aesthetic Society). The NHS allows the garment to come off while you shower.

Weeks 2 to 3. ASPS describes this as the point where you start to feel much better and may return to work, depending on the job, while still limiting exercise. The SCCP places the gradual return to daily activities around the first to second week. The Aesthetic Society says most people resume most normal activities within ten days or less. Most of the swelling has gone by the end of week three.

Weeks 4 to 6. The compression garment usually stays on for four to six weeks (The Aesthetic Society), and strenuous exercise waits for the same four to six weeks because it can bring fluid back into the treated areas. The NHS is more cautious: gentle exercise at around three to four weeks and nothing strenuous for 10 to 12 weeks, always after checking with your surgeon. Some areas may feel firm or slightly uneven at this stage.

Months 2 to 6. Mayo Clinic says swelling typically goes away within a few weeks and the treated area looks slimmer within several months. The Aesthetic Society warns that a fluctuating 10 to 15 percent of swelling can return with exercise or a very active day for six to nine months, which is why judging the result at week four is premature. Numbness usually fades within six to eight weeks (NHS).

What makes liposuction recovery longer or shorter?

How much is treated. One small area and a full midsection are different recoveries. Mayo Clinic says the risk of complications rises when the surgeon works on larger body surfaces or does several procedures in the same operation, and large-volume liposuction can shift enough fluid to affect the kidneys, heart and lungs. Circumferential liposuction of the abdomen, waist and back, often marketed as "lipo 360," sits at the larger end of that range.

What else is done in the same operation. A BBL adds fat grafting to the buttocks, with its own sitting and safety rules; those are covered in BBL Colombia: recovery time and how long to stay. If loose skin or the abdominal wall is part of the problem, the comparison in tummy tuck vs liposuction explains why the recovery is very different.

Your job. A desk job can restart within days. A job with lifting, long hours standing or heat exposure takes longer.

Smoking and medication. The Aesthetic Society asks patients not to smoke, to avoid alcohol while on pain medication and to avoid aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs; Mayo Clinic says surgeons usually ask you to stop blood thinners and NSAIDs at least a week before surgery. Never stop a prescribed medication without asking the doctor who prescribed it.

Compression garment and massage: where sources agree and where they don't

Every source agrees that you will wear a compression garment. They disagree on how long:

The SCCP adds a detail the U.S. pages skip: firm areas (fibrosis) are frequent after liposuction and often need specialized massage, and loose areas may need extra localized pressure inside the garment.

Lymphatic drainage massage is where online advice diverges most. An ASPS article notes that every surgeon has their own rules and that many have liposuction patients start lymphatic massage the day after surgery and continue several times a week for two months; other practices start later or not at all. There is no universal schedule. Ask your surgeon three things: whether you need massage at all, when it starts, and who performs it. A trained therapist working on fresh tissue is not a spa appointment.

What is normal, and when to call your surgeon

Expected in the first weeks, according to general sources:

Contact your surgical team promptly if you notice:

Shortness of breath or chest pain need emergency care right away (CDC), whether you are still in Cartagena or already home.

Recovering in Cartagena and flying home

How many days after liposuction can you fly?

Two published numbers apply, and they are not the same:

So the practical answer depends on how you fly. If you are flying Avianca out of Colombia, plan on at least 14 days, or 15 for a combined plan, plus your surgeon's clearance. On another airline, the ASPS window is the recovery minimum, but check that airline's own rules before you buy the ticket, and keep the return date changeable. The full table by procedure is in flying after plastic surgery.

Building the stay

  1. Arrival days for the in-person evaluation and any tests your surgeon asks for.
  2. Surgery and the first week, spent close to your follow-up appointments.
  3. The flight window: 5–7 days from ASPS as a recovery minimum, or the airline's rule if it is longer.
  4. A pre-flight check with your surgeon and the medical certificate if your airline requires one.
  5. A margin of a few days in case clearance comes later than planned.

Where you spend those days matters. Some patients choose a recovery house with nursing support and others choose a hotel or apartment with a companion; the trade-offs are in our guide to recovery houses in Cartagena. If you are still pricing the trip, the plastic surgery cost guide for Cartagena explains what changes a quote.

Heat, sun and the city

Cartagena's heat makes a compression garment harder to tolerate, so pack breathable layers to wear under it and choose air-conditioned lodging. The Aesthetic Society recommends no sun or heat exposure, including sunbathing, for at least six weeks because it can bring swelling back. ASPS and the CDC Yellow Book both warn that vacation activities after surgery, such as sunbathing, swimming, alcohol and long walking or bus tours, can compromise healing. Short walks in the shade, early or late in the day, are part of recovery. A beach day is not, yet.

On the plane

The CDC lists recent surgery as a risk factor for blood clots on trips longer than four hours and recommends moving your legs often and flexing your ankles. Ask whether you should fly in your garment and whether compression stockings make sense for you. Book an aisle seat, drink water and let someone else lift your bag. Before you leave, ask for copies of your medical records in English, as the CDC Yellow Book recommends for medical tourists.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. How many areas will be treated, and how does that change my recovery?
  2. Will I have drains or stitches, and when do they come out?
  3. Which garment will I wear, for how long, and when can I switch to a lighter one?
  4. Do I need lymphatic massage? If yes, when does it start and who does it?
  5. When is my pre-flight check, and who issues the airline certificate?
  6. What happens if I am not cleared on the date on my ticket?
  7. How does follow-up work once I am home, and who do I call after hours while I am in Cartagena?

Where Dr. Fulvio Correa fits

Dr. Fulvio Correa is a plastic surgeon in Cartagena and a Miembro de Número of the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery (SCCP); his background is on the about page. He performs liposuction in Cartagena and sets each patient's recovery and travel plan after the evaluation, including garment and follow-up instructions. Patients who live abroad can start with a virtual consultation through the international patients program; the plan is confirmed in person before surgery and follow-up continues remotely once you are home. If you are still deciding where to have surgery, read planning liposuction in Cartagena or the guide to plastic surgery in Colombia.

Frequently asked questions

How long is liposuction recovery? Most people return to light daily activity and desk work within a few days to two weeks (Mayo Clinic, ASPS, The Aesthetic Society). Strenuous exercise usually waits four to six weeks, and the final result takes several months to show as swelling settles.

How long do you wear a compression garment after liposuction? It depends on the surgeon. The Aesthetic Society says four to six weeks, Mayo Clinic says a few weeks, and the NHS says constantly for several weeks. Your surgeon decides the type and duration.

When can I go back to work after lipo? Often within a few days for a desk job (Mayo Clinic, The Aesthetic Society). ASPS places the return to work at weeks two to three depending on the job. Physical work takes longer.

How long after liposuction can I fly? ASPS suggests five to seven days after body procedures such as liposuction. Avianca lists 14 days after liposuction and 15 if it is combined with another body procedure, with a medical certificate issued within 10 days of the flight. Your surgeon's clearance comes first either way.

When will I see the final result of liposuction? Mayo Clinic says the area looks less bulky once swelling goes down in a few weeks and slimmer within several months. The NHS says it can take up to six months to settle completely.

Is it normal to feel hard lumps after liposuction? Firm areas are common while swelling resolves, and the SCCP notes that fibrosis often needs specialized massage. Tell your surgeon about any lump that grows, hurts more or feels fluid-filled.
