Overview

A tummy tuck in Colombia—medically, an abdominoplasty—is surgery that removes loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tightens the connective tissue (fascia) over the abdominal muscles. When pregnancy has separated those muscles, a condition called rectus diastasis, the repair narrows the waist and flattens the bulge that exercise alone rarely fixes. Mayo Clinic adds that liposuction is often done at the same time to contour the whole abdominal area.

For patients flying from the United States, the key planning fact is time. Avianca, Colombia's flag carrier, lists travel from 14 days after an abdominoplasty, and recovery from muscle repair is measured in weeks, not days.

Dr. Fulvio Correa, a plastic surgeon in Cartagena, evaluates every abdominoplasty candidate, in person in Cartagena or through a virtual consultation if you are planning from abroad. Below you will find the differences between tummy tuck types, who benefits most, how recovery usually unfolds and what to arrange for your stay. To start, .

Candidates

Mayo Clinic describes the usual reasons people consider an abdominoplasty: large weight changes, pregnancy, a previous C-section, aging or simply a body type that stores fat and skin around the midsection. The procedure can also remove stretch marks located on the skin below the belly button, because that skin is excised.

You are likely to benefit if:

  • loose skin hangs or folds over the lower abdomen, even at a healthy weight;
  • your abdomen bulges when you stand or strain because the muscles have separated;
  • your weight has been steady for several months and you do not plan more pregnancies.

Mayo Clinic lists situations in which a surgeon may advise against it or ask you to wait: plans to lose a large amount of weight, a future pregnancy, serious heart disease or diabetes, blood thinners or a high clot risk, obesity (a body mass index of 30 or higher), smoking, or heavy scarring from earlier abdominal surgery.

If most of your concern is fat rather than skin, liposuction alone may be enough; firm skin retracts after fat removal, loose skin does not. If you also want breast changes after pregnancy, a combined mommy makeover may make more sense.

Technique

Full, mini and lipoabdominoplasty

  • Full abdominoplasty. A low horizontal incision from hip to hip plus a new opening for the navel. Most skin and fat between the navel and the pubic area is removed and the fascia is tightened with permanent stitches.
  • Mini abdominoplasty. A shorter incision that treats only the area below the navel, without repositioning it. It suits a small pocket of loose skin, not significant muscle separation.
  • Lipoabdominoplasty. Liposuction of the upper abdomen and flanks combined with the skin excision, to shape the waist in the same operation.

What happens during surgery

Mayo Clinic explains that a tummy tuck is typically performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical center. After the incision, the surgeon lifts the skin, stitches the fascia together to bring the muscles back toward the midline, trims the excess skin and brings the navel out through a small incision in its natural position. The scar sits above the pubic hair, within the swimsuit line; its length depends on how much skin is removed. Small drains may be left for a few days to remove fluid.

A previous C-section scar can usually become part of the new incision.

Stay in Cartagena

Building the trip around the 14-day mark

Avianca lists air travel from 14 days after an abdominoplasty, mini abdominoplasty or lipoabdominoplasty and requests a medical certificate issued no more than 10 days before the flight; if you fly another carrier, read its policy before booking. Medical clearance still comes first: the surgeon checks the wound, drains and your mobility before signing off. Your recommended stay is confirmed after evaluation.

Arranging your stay

  • Arrive early enough for in-person evaluation and any tests requested before surgery.
  • Travel with a companion. Mayo Clinic advises having someone stay with you at least the first night; after abdominal muscle repair, getting out of bed and bending are hard for several days.
  • Pick lodging with an elevator, air conditioning and a bed or recliner that lets you rest with the hips slightly flexed.
  • Pack high-waisted, loose clothes that fit over a binder in Caribbean heat.
  • On the flight home, choose an aisle seat, walk when allowed and drink water.

Choosing where to have it done

A tummy tuck is major surgery, so verify credentials before you book. Dr. Correa is a Miembro de Número of the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica, which you can check on the society's website. For a broader checklist, read how U.S. patients choose a tummy tuck surgeon in Colombia.

Specific risks

Mayo Clinic lists the main risks specific to abdominoplasty:

  • Seroma, a collection of fluid under the skin. Drains lower the risk, and fluid can be removed with a needle if it builds up.
  • Poor wound healing, sometimes with separation along the incision. Antibiotics may be given around surgery.
  • Scarring. The scar is permanent; its length and visibility vary from person to person.
  • Tissue damage. Fatty tissue deep in the skin can be damaged or die, and smoking raises this risk.
  • Changes in skin sensation, usually numbness of the lower abdomen that tends to improve over months.

General surgical risks—bleeding, infection, pain and reactions to anesthesia—also apply. A tummy tuck followed by a long flight adds clot risk, which is why early walking is encouraged; Mayo Clinic notes that surgeons may also prescribe a short course of blood-thinning medicine. Call your team urgently for calf swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, fever or a hard, painful swelling.

General information only; your own risks are reviewed at consultation.

Recovery timeline

Days 1–7

The team helps you walk as early as the first day to lower clot risk. You will walk slightly bent at the waist, wear a binder and may have drains, which are usually removed within days. Expect swelling and tightness when standing up.

Weeks 2–4

Posture straightens gradually. Mayo Clinic notes that many people return to work in about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how physical the job is. Travel clearance is usually considered in this window.

Weeks 4–8

Keep avoiding lifting, straining and sudden bending for the first six weeks. The binder is often worn for about 6 to 8 weeks, and sports wait at least eight weeks (Mayo Clinic).

Up to one year

Swelling settles over months. The scar can take up to a year to fade as much as it will; results tend to last as long as your weight stays stable.

If firm skin means fat is the only issue, compare with Liposuction

When the abdomen is one of several changes after pregnancy, the tummy tuck is often part of a Mommy Makeover

Questions about tummy tuck

How long do I need to stay in Colombia after a tummy tuck?

Plan around at least two weeks if you are flying: Avianca lists travel from 14 days after an abdominoplasty with a medical certificate issued within 10 days of the flight. The final date depends on your surgeon's clearance at follow-up.

What is the difference between a full and a mini tummy tuck?

A full tummy tuck removes skin from hip to hip, repositions the navel and usually tightens the abdominal muscles. A mini tummy tuck uses a shorter incision and treats only the area below the navel.

Will a tummy tuck fix muscle separation after pregnancy?

Yes, that is one of its main purposes. The surgeon stitches the fascia over separated abdominal muscles, a condition called rectus diastasis, which flattens the bulge and narrows the waist.

When can I go back to work after a tummy tuck?

Mayo Clinic notes that many people return to work in about two to four weeks. Physical jobs take longer, and lifting or straining is avoided for about six weeks.

Does a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?

It removes stretch marks located on the skin that is excised, mostly below the belly button. Stretch marks above that area may remain, although they can shift lower.

Can I have a tummy tuck if I want more children?

It is usually better to wait. A future pregnancy can stretch the skin and separate the muscles again, and Mayo Clinic lists planned pregnancy as a reason surgeons may advise against surgery.
